1. Introduction

Some web cameras on the market do not support standard surveillance camera specifications and functions, and therefore cannot be used directly in Surveillance Center. This type of web camera will save the recording files to a local storage device inside the web cameras, but the capacity is limited and cannot save recording video files for many days.

Taking Xiaomi camera as an example to introduce how to back up the video files of Xiaomi camera to ASUSTOR NAS through the SAMBA (SMB) protocol here. NAS provides larger capacity and a more comprehensive data protection mechanism, which can store important video files more effectively and play video files directly in ASUSTOR NAS.

2. Saving video files from web cameras to an ASUSTOR NAS

Step 1

• Confirm whether the SD card is inserted in the camera.

Step 2

• Ensure SAMBA is enabled on ASUSTOR NAS.
• Log into your ADM using your Web browser.
• Select [Services] [SMB].
• Select [Enable SMB] and click on [Apply].

Some older web cameras only support SMB 1. If you use such cameras, please set the "Lowest SMB version" to SMB 1.

Step 3

• Open the Mi Home APP on your mobile devices.
• Open Xiaomi Camera.
• Open the Settings, and click [Manage storage] [NAS network storage] in the top right corner.
• Select your NAS and enter the account and password to complete the login.

Step 4

• Select the shared folder on the NAS where you want to store the video files, for example: "Video".
• Complete the connection between Xiaomi camera and NAS.

Step 5

• Logging into ADM, open File Explorer.
• Select the folder where Xiaomi video files are stored, for example: "Video".
• Check whether the folder named "xiaomi_camera_videos" appears.

3. Playing video files from web cameras on ASUSTOR NAS

The video and audio formats of the recording files on most web cameras are popular and can be played directly in the ADM File Explorer.

Step 1

• Log into your ADM using your Web browser.
• Locate the [File Explorer] icon in the ADM desktop and click on it.
• Select the "xiaomi_camera_videos" folder and the required video file, double-click the file directly or right-click to open the menu, and click on "Preview".

Step 2

• ADM will play the video file by using default video player.

If the ADM default video player cannot play the video file, please try the Media conversion on the File Explorer, or refer to here to install LooksGood and use the media converter to convert the video files.
